 AUTHOR'S WELCOME

I drove to work to the same location on the same roads at the same time of the day for nearly 30 years.  Admittedly, seldom did I notice many things along the drive, as the routine overshadowed my ability to “see” my surroundings.  An exception to this situation occurred each time I began to evaluate my options for purchasing a new automobile.  It never ceased to amaze me that once I locked into a specific model (and even color), my normal drive would be highlighted with my recognition of the exact model of automobile I was interested.  Why is this?

I would suggest the answer lies in how the desired car was placed into my consciousness, and how I was much more attuned to recognizing the automobile type than ever before.

The purpose of this book parallels this phenomenon, as it will help the reader define leadership for what is it, as the individual gains an appreciation and ignites his or her consciousness of organizational, strategic, and executive leadership.

I welcome you to this collection of articles and practical examples of leadership and people who reside in leadership positions, as I have reflected on decades of experience in major organizations, and pulled from the past 10 years as a life-long learner, student and professor of the fascinating study of organizational leadership.

The format for this book parallels the key ingredients all leaders must possess and exhibit, including their ability to envision the future direction for the organization, to motivate followers, to unify and build effective teams, to serve the needs of others before one’s own needs, and to promote positive change for the good of their organizations.  Each of the 27 articles serve as a piece of a puzzle, and when reviewed in its entirety, is intended to provide the learner and student of leadership a clear understanding of what leadership is, and what it is not.

In addition to the 27 articles, I have also identified samples of people you too will recognize from your own experiences in organizations.  The names may be different than your own experiences, but the behaviors and actions will similar. In the context of our study, I suggest organizations can be based around business purposes, as well as religious, community-based, or politically-centric.  Regardless of the purpose, each of these four types of organizations equally has the need for effective leadership.  The names and titles in my examples may be different than the ones you are accustomed, but I am confident you will recognize the type and behaviors.  After reading this book, I challenge you to draw your own conclusions.

Finally, in each of the six sections of the book, Iris McGee presents a real-world case intended to challenge your critical thinking and understanding of the application of leadership within organizations.  Additionally, I pose a series of discussion questions, which are intended for the life-long learner to analyze and apply critical thinking.  Iris and I also encourage you and your fellow learners to engage in academic discussion, debate, and at times, academic discourse.  Push yourselves to fully comprehend and expand your embrace of these core concepts.

The intent of this presentation is to ignite your awareness and consciousness of the meaning and purpose of organizational, strategic, and executive leadership.  By bringing these topics and examples into the forefront of your thinking, I am convinced you will be in a better position to recognize leadership around you, in order to grow and develop your personal leadership abilities, as well as your willingness to lead.

Thank you, and happy learning.
